Gel Nails vs BIAB Nails: Which Is Best for You?

If you’re choosing between gel nails and BIAB nails and feel a bit unsure, you’re not alone. Both look glossy and last well, but they behave differently on the nail and they’re maintained in different ways. Think of gel polish as beautiful colour with staying power, and BIAB (Builder In A Bottle) as a strengthening layer that can shape and protect your natural nails. Once you know the difference, it’s easy to pick what suits your nails, lifestyle and budget.

What gel polish actually does

Gel polish is thin colour that’s cured under a lamp. It gives that mirror-shine finish and usually lasts around two to three weeks with proper prep and aftercare. It’s brilliant if your nails are already in decent condition and you want a neat, tidy look without bulk. Because it’s thin, gel lets your natural nail shape show through. If your nails are quite strong, you’ll get a sleek finish that feels light and looks immaculate from day one.

Removal is simple when done properly. We break the topcoat seal, soak off, and tidy the nail plate without scraping. Most clients book a removal and reapply in the same visit. If you’re hard on your hands or prone to picking, gel on its own may chip sooner, cuticle oil, gloves for chores and avoiding long hot soaks will help keep that shine locked in.

What BIAB does differently

BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle. It’s a thicker, flexible builder gel designed to add structure. We apply it in controlled layers and create a gentle apex (that tiny curve in the stress area) to reinforce the nail. The result is stronger natural nails that are less likely to peel, bend or snap. If you’ve struggled to grow your nails, or you’re coming back from damage, BIAB gives protection while your nails improve underneath.

BIAB can be worn clear, nude or under colour. Many clients choose BIAB for the base and then add gel colour on top. The finish still looks natural—thin at the edges, smooth around the cuticle and it grows out gracefully. Day-to-day, it feels a touch thicker than gel, but not heavy. That added support is exactly why it lasts so well.

Maintenance: infills vs soak-off

Here’s a key difference. With gel polish, you usually soak off and reapply every two to three weeks. With BIAB, we book infills. At an infill, we gently refine the grown-out apex, rebalance the structure and refresh colour/topcoat. This protects your natural nail and avoids repeated full removals. If you like a steady routine and want to build length over time, infills are efficient and kinder to the nail plate.

If you fancy a break, BIAB can be fully removed with care—no peeling. We’ll protect the nail during removal and follow with a nourishing finish so your nails feel comfortable bare.

Durability and daily life

If you type, work with your hands or your nails tend to split at the corners, BIAB’s structure usually wins for durability. It reduces flex, which means fewer stress cracks and less lifting. If your nails are naturally strong and you just want two or three weeks of glossy colour, gel polish is perfect and feels feather-light. Both options benefit from daily cuticle oil, gentle filing if you snag a corner, and gloves for housework.

Can BIAB add length?

Yes - short, subtle length can be built with BIAB using forms or tips, ideal for minor shape corrections or if one or two nails lag behind. For dramatic, long extensions, a hard gel or other extension system is better. If you only need neat overlays on your natural length, BIAB is in its element.

Finish and look

Gel polish is the go-to for pure colour: sheer nudes, chic reds, modern French, seasonal shades, you name it. BIAB delivers that same salon-gloss, but with a slightly more “perfected” nail shape because of the apex. If you love the look of naturally strong nails that keep their curve as they grow, BIAB gives that “polished without being bulky” vibe. You can still wear any gel colour on top; the base just does more of the heavy lifting.

Nail health and sensitivities

Applied and removed correctly, neither service should damage your nails. The risk comes from over-filing, improper curing or peeling off product at home. We prep gently, cure to spec and remove with care. If you have known acrylate sensitivities or current nail infections, we’ll advise on safer options or suggest a recovery plan first. Your nail health comes before any finish.

Cost and timing

A BIAB first set often takes a little longer than gel due to the structure work, and infills are a touch more detailed than a simple gel reapply. The upside is longevity and strength, which many clients find worth the extra minutes in the chair. Gel appointments are usually a bit quicker and can be great for regular colour changes or event nails.

So, which should you choose?

Pick gel polish if your nails are already fairly strong, you love switching colours and you want a light, sleek finish that lasts a couple of weeks. Choose BIAB if you want extra strength, you’re growing your nails, or you’re tired of chips and corner breaks. If you’re unsure, start with BIAB as your base and add gel colour on top, you’ll enjoy the best of both worlds: structure plus shine.
